Research shows that early childhood experiences have a very strong impact on children’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. Positive parenting and nurturing care are essential for children during their early years.

Bertin is a cocoa farmer in the village of Doubo, in southern Ivory Coast. He and his wife recently received training on positive parenting practices and nurturing care.

“Children don’t like violence. If you are violent with your child, he can’t listen to you,” says Bertin. Over 90% of Ivorian children experience violent discipline at home according to UNICEF. This has an impact on their well-being and can hinder their educational achievements.

Bertin’s training was delivered by Ivorian government agents mentored by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) with support from Solidaridad. The project is part of a partnership between TRECC and Mondelēz International. Through TRECC, the world’s leading cocoa and chocolate companies are making great efforts towards improving quality of education in cocoa-growing communities in Ivory Coast.
