Research is essential to inform public policy with relevant data and address the challenges of early childhood development and education quality. Unfortunately, this potential is largely untapped in sub-Saharan Africa. Public spending on research remains below target, which has a negative impact on the quality of the studies carried out, but also on motivation and long-term commitment, especially among young researchers.
Our capacity building initiatives
International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) Doctoral Fellowship Program
The objective of this programme is to provide mentoring, intensive training and experience to Ivorian researchers in the design, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of research and interventions aimed at improving early childhood development and the quality of education in Côte d’Ivoire. For the first phase of this programme, six doctoral students have been selected. They receive an annual stipend of CHF 12,000, a contribution to research costs and an international mentor. They will attend three intensive research workshops and will be invited to present their research work at the 26th Biennial Meeting of the ISSBD in Rhodes, Greece, in July 2020.
Direct recruitment of students as Research Assistants on TRECC mandated research projects
Researchers who conduct research projects under the TRECC program also contribute to the training of students whom they recruit as research assistants. About 30 assistants have thus received essential training in research ethics, study design, development of evaluation tools, field research and data collection, statistical analysis and data dissemination. More than a dozen students participated in local and international conferences, including in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and the United States. Other students had the opportunity to stay as visiting researchers at the University of Delaware or to participate in an intensive English language learning program in Ghana in preparation for a six-month internship at Radbound University in the Netherlands.
